Our Yoga Exercise Classes
Yoga is the most ancient system for physical, mental and spiritual well-being in the world.
The different systems of yoga have techniques and practices ranging from physical postures (asanas), to the deepest stages of meditation, all aimed toward helping a person achieve optimum physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Following ancient tradition, a yoga class at ASMY will include a wonderful balance of asanas (exercise), breathing (pranayama), meditation and kirtan.
Yoga Asana: Beginner/Easy
This instructional class will teach you how to pratice yoga with proper alignment and safety. It is a great way to ease into yoga if you are just starting out, haven't been for a while, would like to improve your alignment or you want to attend a more gentle, relaxed asana class.
Yoga Asana: Easy/Stretch
Easy/stretch classes provide gentle stretching and breathing for every body. In this class you’ll gently loosen stiff joints and ease out aching muscles while soothing the nervous system and calming the mind. Easy classes are gentle, slower moving and lots of instructions are given and are a great way to start if you’ve never practiced yoga asanas before or if it's been a while since you’ve attended a class. It is also a wonderful class for the regular practitioner who wants a good all over stretch.
Yoga Asana: Yin
Melt into our relaxing yin class with this meditative asana practice. Soft lighting, mellow music and poses held for 3 – 5 minutes allow a deeper stretch and opening of the body and quiet rest for the mind. Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin yoga moves beyond muscle and generally targets the connective tissues, ligament, and bones of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. Suitable for almost all levels of students. Yin helps you to slow down, listen to and be with the body.
Yoga Asana: Gentle
Increase flexibility, destress and relax with this gentle flow. This meditative Hatha yoga class balances body and mind while giving an all over stretch and is an ideal pick-me-up and reset for busy lives. Using the breath to focus and deepen our practice, we allow the body to open and soften at a gentle pace which calms the mind and revitalises the body. Suitable for all levels and abilities.
Yoga Asana: Hatha
Hatha Yoga classes are slower moving, poses are held longer and the focus on deep stretching and strengthening. Monday and Thursday classes are more challenging, but easier options are given to tailor the class to suit most levels of fitness and flexibility.
Yoga Asana: Yin Yang
This class is a combination of yin (see above) and flow (see below) to give nice balance of deep stretching, flow and strength work. It is quite a strong class, but easy options are given.
Yoga Asana: Flow
This class is a flowing vinyasa style class using sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow. It is excellent for increasing aerobic fitness and strength as well as flexibility. Vinyasa is a stronger style of class and a little more challenging. However as with all our classes easy options are given, so you can make it as easy or challenging as you’d like.
Yoga Asana: Power Vinyasa
Linking movement and breathe, Power Vinyasa is a dynamic form of asana movement suitable for experienced yoga practitioners. This fun yet challenging class will increase cardiovascular activity, generate greater flexibility, build muscular strength and agility as well as develop focus and decrease agitation of the mind.
Yoga Asana: Energy
This is a flowing vinyasa asana class, harmonising movement with breath to energise the body and focus the mind. It will increase your aerobic fitness, invigorate your body, deepen your asanas and increase your strength. This challenging class is suitable for students familiar with alignment and muscle control and is not suitable for beginners.
Yoga Asana: Hatha Vinyasa
This class starts with sun salutations and moves on to a series of standing and sitting postures, which can be held for up to 20 breaths. Vinyasas are the link between each posture that keeps the heat within the body which allows you to go deeper into the posture. The constant moving not only works your muscles but also helps to quiet the mind.Designed to build the fire within, it is a stronger, more challenging style of class and not suitable for beginners.

KIRTAN – SACRED CHANTING MEDITATION
Kirtan is the singing of ancient Vedic mantras, spiritually uplifting songs, prayers and the Sacred Names of the Supreme. Rather than being a type of performance, Kirtan is a journey of self discovery.
This ancient yogic practice was traditionally accompanied with Indian instruments. In the hands and voices of contemporary practitioners, Kirtan has been transported beautifully to all cultural and musical styles without losing its genuine spiritual authenticity.
Weaving together melody, music and mantra with people responding to the words of the singer, clapping, swaying and sometimes dancing, Kirtan is simultaneously a meditative, exhilarating and fun activity.
Kirtan is the most powerful and enjoyable form of meditation. By meditating on these sacred sounds we reach a state far beyond the stress and worries of life.
The eternal wisdom contained in the yoga texts explain that these mantras are transcendental sounds endowed with unlimited spiritual potency. They purify one’s consciousness and bring deep spiritual insight and inner happiness.
Everyone is looking for something real, lasting and fully satisfying in their life. That “something” is reconnecting to our spiritual source, to experience spiritual love. Kirtan nourishes the soul’s deepest needs by reawakening this spiritual love within our hearts. From this place of peace, love, joy and harmony, let the rest of your life unfold.
Come celebrate, meditate and let the music set you free. Join with other likeminded souls in the extraordinarily inspiring experience that is live kirtan.
Kirtan is held at West End on Wednesdays 7-8.30pm, Fridays 6-8pm and Sundays 5-8pm. Sessions are by donation, everyone is welcome and there is no need to book.
