Rotated Wide Leg Forward Bend (Parivritta Prasarita Padottanasana)

This is a feel-good pose that can be adapted for most levels of flexibility.

It not only feels good but is strengthening for the legs, back, core and shoulders. Twists are said to align the spine and we will get a lovely stretch on the legs, torso and shoulders.

Let’s try it:

  • Stand with your legs wide apart and feet parallel to each other. Place your hands on your hips.
  • Bend your knees a little and fold forward with a straight back to half way.
  • Lower your hands to the floor, block or low stool while keeping your back straight.
  • You may now begin to straighten your legs providing you can maintain your straight back.
  • Move your left hand to centre of your leg span and bring your right hand to your sacrum (this is to check that your sacrum stays flat as your twist)
  • Inhale long spine, exhale gently rotate to the right.
  • Inhale raise your right arm to the sky. You can turn your head to look up if you like.
  • Take most of the weight out of your left hand and use your core muscles to hold you up.
  • Stay for five or more breaths and repeat on the other side.
  • Finish the pose with a back stretch by walking your hands forward
