Just in Time for Summer: Vegan Hot Dogs

Summer is just around the corner which means outside is a good place to be!
Picnics and barbecues abound, but what to take if you’re vegetarian?

These delicious, vegetarian hot dogs can be cooked on the barbecue and eaten in a roll with your usual favourite sauces and salad. Or, they are equally as nice fried or baked at home.

Feel free to change up the spices to suit your tastes preference. You might prefer a spicier version or maybe you like a smoky flavour. The main ingredients are the gluten flour, beans and garlic,  then once you have become familiar with how they taste you can start making your own variations.

The only ingredient that you may be unfamiliar with is gluten flour.  Gluten flour is usually available at bulk health food stores (the ones where you can buy whole-food ingredients measured to scale).

Ingredients

  • 1/2 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3/4 cup cooked pinto or cannellini  beans well-drained
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons water or veggie stock
  • 2 tablespoons  soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons  paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 cup gluten flour
  • 1/3 cup  quick rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds

Instructions

  1. Fry the garlic and onion for a few minutes until the onion is softened.
  2. Blend or process the onion mixture, beans, water, soy sauce, tomato paste, nutritional yeast, and all the seasonings  into a thin paste.
  3. Combine remaining ingredients (gluten, oatmeal, yeast, and flax) in a large mixing bowl. Add the contents wet ingredients and stir until combined. If it seems that there’s not enough moisture, add another tablespoon or two of water or liquid stock. Knead in the bowl for about two minutes until a heavy gluten “dough” is formed.
  4. Set up a steamer and bring the water to the boil.
  5. Cut off 8 pieces of aluminium foil and 8 pieces of baking paper, each about 15cms long. Divide the hot dog mix into 8 equal pieces. Place a piece of foil with the baking paper on it on the counter. Roll a piece of gluten between the palms of your hands until it’s about the size and shape of a hot dog. Place it on the foil/paper and tightly roll it up. Roll the tube back and forth, pressing lightly with your hands, to give it an even shape, and then twist the ends closed. Repeat with the remaining sausage mix to form 8 veggie hot dogs.
  6. Place all the veggie dogs in the top of a steamer, cover, and steam for 45 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before unwrapping. Store the veggie dogs in a covered container in the refrigerator. Warm gently in a frying pan, microwave or on a grill before serving.
