We are about to enter the holiday season and everyone will be busy preparing for Christmas. Unfortunately Many of us have forgotten the person that the entire Christmas season is supposed to be centred around.
2015 years ago Jesus Christ was born in a little town called Bethlehem. The holiday of Christmas commemorates that holy occasion and can be a wonderful time for us to reflect on the purpose of his life.
“This is My beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.” (Matthew 17:5)We are about to enter the holiday season and everyone will be busy preparing for Christmas. Unfortunately Many of us have forgotten the person that the entire Christmas season is supposed to be centred around.
Jesus’ mission in this world was to enlighten others. He himself tasted the sweetness of spiritual love, and his desire was for each of us to be able to taste this as well. He came to teach us that the only way we can really experience inner happiness is when we’re tasting love for the Supreme Person.
While there’s nothing wrong with giving and receiving gifts as an expression of our love for another person, we need to clearly understand that nothing material can satisfy the spiritual being, the soul. Jesus taught this very clearly in these beautiful passages from his sermon on the mount:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food,
and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For your heavenly Father knows that you need these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”
