Carob Fruit Bliss Balls

 

If you come to one of the yoga asana classes at ASMY West End, you will be offered one of these delicious healthy balls at the end of the class.  We often jokingly call them Juliet’s Rum-less Rum Balls.

  • 500 g dates
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup carob powder
  • coconut for rolling

Wash dates and cover with water and simmer until most of the water has gone then stir well to break up the dates and set aside

Toast sesame seeds in heavy bottom  pan, and grind using a coffee grinder, good blender or food processor

Blend or food process the rolled oats until the texture if fine and mix everything well. (you may need to use well washed hands.. but make sure the dates are cool enough first)

Use more carob or rolled oats or ground sesame if the texture is too wet.  you can let it sit for a few hours before rolling but you may have to adjust the constancy.

Roll into balls and coat in coconut, store covered in fridge for up to a week.  They also freeze beautifully.

Endless variations are possible, use other dried fruit, nuts (chopped or ground), sunflower seeds, rice bubbles, peanut butter instead of sesame seeds, milk powder, etc.

I sometimes add orange rind, ginger powder or crystallised ginger, a little ground aniseed, a drop or two of peppermint oil, apricots or sultanas instead of raisins etc. all the measurements are approximate, what exactly I use depends on what I have on hand, you just need a nice consistency for rolling.

Makes about 50 small balls.
