Off to a Good Start…

Almost all of us have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many of us ignore this fact or just can’t seem to fit it into our busy schedules. Many medical reports have shown that low blood-sugar levels, diabetes, hyperactivity and even heart conditions can be effectively managed when breakfast is made a priority. After studying the lifestyles of 7000 men and women, researchers at the University of California listed eating breakfast regularly as one of the seven health habits that helps one attain longevity.

Of course, prioritising breakfast doesn’t only mean being sure to eat it, but to make sure it’s made up of the healthiest ingredients. That means cereals that are so sugar-laden they could be classified as candy are out as a quick breakfast (40 percent of the leading commercial breakfast cereals found on supermarket shelves consist of one-third or more sugar) – and so is the traditional cholesterol, saturated fat and nitrate laden bacon and egg breakfast. Breakfast smoothies are perfect because combined with fresh fruit in season, they are a nutritious meal that is quick and easy to prepare.

Breakfast Smoothies

Served with pieces of fresh fruit or wholemeal toast, these smoothies make a complete meal!

Breakfast Drink

  • 4-5 cups soaking water (”rejuvelac”)
  • 1 cup raw, hulled sunflower seeds
  • 1/3 cup raw almonds
  • 2/3 cup raisins
  • ½ cup carob powder
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 4 Tbsp lecithin granules
  • 2 tsp grain coffee substitute

Soak first 4 ingredients together for 24 hours till tips of almonds and sunflower seeds begin to germinate. Pour all 4 ingredients into blender. Blend till smooth. Serve as a breakfast drink along with pieces of fresh fruit. Makes six 1-cup servings.

Sensational Breakfast Smoothie

  • 6 dates
  • ¼ cup almonds
  • 5 walnut halves
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp sunflower seeds
  • 1 medium banana
  • ½ mango
  • ½ avocado
  • 2-¼ cup rice milk
  • 1 Tbsp lecithin granules
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 Tbsp Spirulina powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Soak the dates almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds overnight in 2 cups of water. Drain and set aside. Place all the ingredients in a blender and whiz for 2 minutes. Serve in tall glasses with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. You can use other fruit in season.
